The Serendipity of Blur

When I read Meredith's "Camera Toss" post I realized I have been doing similar serendipitous work like that for years. Every once in a while I experiment with blur by taking photos in low light conditions, moving my camera while shooting, or just trying odd angles. The results vary but there is something in these photos that keeps me playing with light. It is also much less risky on my camera than camera toss.

Here are some examples...

Hoehn - Scooter Blur Hoehn - Paris Encounter Hoehn - Concert Light Effect

  • Shot while riding on my Italian scooter going around a curve, yikes!
  • This was taken during a taxicab ride in Paris with the camera sitting on my lap. I pointed it upward and out the window. This shot is of a bus whizzing by. I like the chance encounter I captured (see the hand on the girl's arm?). I enlarged this one and have it hanging in my office at Kodak.
  • While Metallica was playing at Woodstock '99 I found a pair of those funky glasses you wear that give you a prism effect. I held them in front of the lens and got this picture.

These two shots were also from a concert (Lilith Fair). I think that the dripping lights look cool.

This one is not as spontaneous - just playing with the flash. I think my brother would much rather have the picture on the right for the cover of his first album than the one on the left.

Shape shifting at a fashion show in Athens. Doesn't this look downright spooky?

So, for those of you that need to perfect their skills at "camera catch" before trying "camera toss" you might try experimenting with angles, light, and motion first!
